Brave Rescue Attempt for Dog in Icy Pond
Staff Report /
**Dog Rescued from Icy Pond in Oklahoma City, Despite Brave Efforts, Pet Could Not Be Saved**
Oklahoma City Fire Rescue crews responded to an urgent call about a dog that had fallen through the ice at a pond near SW 21st and Meridian, inside an apartment complex. The incident occurred approximately 50 to 60 feet from the shore, prompting an immediate response from the department's dive team.
Two divers, equipped with dry suits, launched a boat to attempt the rescue but faced challenges as the thin ice could not support their weight. Making their way toward the animal, they had to break through the ice as they advanced.
The team was successful in retrieving the dog and began life-saving measures upon returning to the shore. Unfortunately, despite their valiant efforts, the dog could not be saved.
Oklahoma City Fire Rescue stresses the dangers of thin ice and reminds the community of the following:
⚠️ Ice on ponds and lakes is unpredictable and unsafe to walk on.
🐶 Pets should always be kept on a leash and away from potentially icy areas.
🚒 In case of ice emergencies, such as someone or a pet falling through, call 911 immediately and avoid attempting a rescue on your own.
This incident serves as a reminder to prioritize safety around frozen bodies of water.
